Eyelid Surgery

Upper Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

A very common occurrence with facial aging is developing excess skin of the upper eyelids.  Too much skin in this area leads to loss of the natural eyelid crease.  This can make it difficult to put on eye shadow.  A significant amount of excess skin can weigh down your eyelashes and even contribute to obstructing a portion of your vision.

An Upper Blepharoplasty is performed to remove the laxity of the eyelid skin or to unweight the upper eyelids. Extra skin is removed and your natural eyelid crease is restored. This procedure is done to give you a freshened, more “awake” appearance. This procedure is typically done with local anesthetic in the office and recovery is less than a week.

Lower Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Whether it's genetic or from facial aging, bags or “puffiness”  the lower eyelids can contribute to looking tired or sad.  This problem is often due to bulging of excess fat under the eye. Removing excess fat is performed with a Lower Blepharoplasty.

In this procedure, incisions are hidden behind the lower eyelid. The bulging fat underneath the skin is carefully removed to create a smoother appearance.  This procedure has no visible scars, and no sutures are needed. Recovery is typically less than one week.

Lower eyelid surgery is very delicate and should only be performed by fellowship-trained surgeons who are experts in eyelid surgery.

In addition, Dr. Yamamoto has developed the Under Eye Enhancement procedure (please see the next section). This is a short in-office procedure that addresses dark circles under the eyes.  To determine whether surgery or the under eye enhancement procedure is best to address the bags and dark circles under your eyes, see Dr. Yamamoto for an evaluation and consultation.

Under Eye Enhancement (non-surgical procedure to address dark circles under the eyes)

One of the most popular procedures at our office is the Under Eye Enhancement.  This addresses the common complaint of having dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles contribute to the eyes looking older and tired. This problem can be attributed to an area of depression just under the eyelid which causes a “shadow effect,” making the skin look darker.  The Under Eye Enhancement is designed to fill in those areas of depression and smooth out the skin of the lower eyelid.

In this procedure, very small amounts of Restylane® are delicately injected along the under eye to carefully fill the area to correction.  This is a short and convenient procedure that can be done over your lunch break.  Another great advantage of this procedure is that filler injected in this area can last 1.5 to 3 years.  You can walk out of the office and enjoy these long-term results immediately.  Of all of the procedures that use dermal fillers, this is one provides some of the most dramatic results and can be the best bang for the buck.  Come for a consultation with Dr. Yamamoto to see if the Under Eye Enhancement is right for you.
